Back in 1923, Louise Maclay and Alfred B. bought property in Tallahassee, Florida. It was meant to be their winter home. As years passed, they put in work transforming the property into beautiful ornamental gardens. These gardens sit on a 476-hectare piece of land.
In 1953, the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park was donated to the state of Florida by Mrs. Maclay after her husband passed on. These gardens are governed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection which is charged with the role of environmental protection.
In 2002, these gardens received the designation of a US Historic District. This was accorded by the National Register of Historic Places. These gardens contain 18 historic buildings, 4 objects, and 4 structures. This park has a museum comprising interpretive exhibits.
Camellias and azaleas are common within these gardens. These plants can be seen as you walk all through the gardens. Dogwood, bald cypress, hickory, black gum, oak, Japanese maple, and plum are some of the trees within the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. Mountain laurel such as the evergreen shrubs of the Kalmia latifolia also grow within these gardens.
Lake Hall provides swimming opportunities for visitors. You can also be able to fish and canoe within the lake. Boats that do not use gas are permitted. The perfect picnic setting is provided for by grills and pavilions along the shore.
Walking enthusiasts can enjoy the nature trails that overlook the lake. Bicyclists, joggers, horse riders and hikers have 6 miles that run throughout the woods. You also get the chance to view wildlife as you transverse these gardens.
The Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park is the perfect getaway for you and family or friends. It is a place to unwind. You can have picnics within the gardens. The park is opened on a daily basis. Lastly, the park is also available for booking if you are planning to wed.
